What is the history of Brympton House?

Brympton House developed over several centuries, with surviving work from the 15th, 16th, late 17th and early 18th centuries. Historic England records it as a Grade I country house, designated on 19 April 1961.

The Parks & Gardens register traces the estate to Thomas d’Evercy, who purchased land at Brympton in 1220. His descendants held it until 1325, when Sir Peter d’Evercy died owning a principal house with adjoining gardens and closes.

The estate was sold to John Stourton in 1430, then formed part of the dowry of his daughter Joan when she married John Sydenham in 1434.

Members of the Sydenham and Fane families built the house in stages. Its south garden façade dates to about 1670. Beside St Andrew’s parish church stands the 15th-century Dower House, also called the Chantry House, associated with Dame Joan Sydenham.

After the Second World War, the estate was let to a school. Charles and Judy Clive-Ponsonby-Fane returned to live at Brympton in 1974 and began restoration work in the grounds.
